National Cherry Festival 2007

First settled in 1826, the township of Young has grown from a humble sheep station to the thriving regional centre we see today. Widely known as the ‘Cherry Capital of Australia’ the area boasts many cherry and stonefruit orchards, some offering ‘pick your own’. Highlights of the year include Cherry Blossom in September/October and the National Cherry Festival in late November/early December.

During late November and early December, the whole district comes alive with the excitement of the National Cherry Festival and all its different activities. Events include the Big Breakfast, Heritage Day – featuring sheep dog trials and amusements for the whole family, followed by a retail market day, street parade and a concert/street party.

A number of orchards and wineries produce local product with many roadside stalls showcasing jams, preserved fruits and cherry wine, as well as chocolate coated prunes and sauces. During festival time, the Cherry King & Queen are crowned. They are crowned on the basis that they raise money for charity, as well as having good general knowledge of Young.

The National Cherry Festival in Young runs from the 30th November to 2nd December 2007.

Rudd puts a plug in the political pork-a-thon

It was the day that the great juggernaut of me-tooism came to a shuddering, jolting halt in the 2007 election campaign. It was the day that Kevin Rudd demonstrated the judgment and the confidence to end the crazed auction of Australia’s future. And it was the day that Rudd made his first serious effort to give meaning to his claim to be an economic conservative.

Until yesterday, John Howard and Rudd had been engaged in a deranged bidding war. Both leaders were promising to spend our money in a way that only increased the risk that Australia’s 16-year boom would end in bust. After Howard’s pledge at his campaign launch to spend another $9.5 billion, it was Rudd’s turn to cry “me too”. Instead, Rudd called a halt: “I have no intention today of repeating Mr Howard’s irresponsible spending spree.”

Surprisingly, this drew spirited applause from the Labor faithful at the party’s campaign launch, perhaps the first time a politician has launched a campaign by promising to offer less.
