Jellyfish Cafe – food review

Manly is one of Sydney’s landmark seaside destinations. Attractions and exciting activities await you including Manly Beach, kayaking, swimming, tennis, golf, beach volleyball, roller blading, scenic and historical walks, art, parasailing, scuba diving, fishing, dining and so much more. Manly is the perfect destination for your next Sydney escape.
When you’ve been hanging out at the beach and you need to refuel, forget combing your hair and getting the sand out of your cozzie, relax and tuck into some great food at Jellyfish Café in Manly. Jellyfish is by the water, not in the water, and is owned and run by three surfing mates who wanted a place to stretch out, grab some food and cruise through the day.
So start your cruisy day well by diving into the Jellyfish Big Breakfast piled high with sausages, eggs, bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms and toast or go for the crispy corn and zucchini fritters with roast tomato and lemon ricotta. After a swim in the ocean and a sun bake on Manly Beach you’ll be ready for lunch and with dishes like the nicoise salad with seared tuna, green beans, olives, capers and fried quail eggs; angel hair pasta with garlic, chilli and prawn broth; and the spiced seared salmon with parsnip puree and walnut salad, Jellyfish know how to keep their customers coming back for more.
The great thing about Jellyfish is that although it’s an easy-going café by day, at night the candles are lit and romance is in the air, though it still holds onto its ‘cool as a cucumber’ vibe. Head to Jellyfish Café in Manly for the fantastic surf and great food where you can rest easy with a meal and chill out for the whole day.

Festival of the Winds 2008
The skies of Bondi will be all a quiver with hundreds of kites of varying shape, size and description sailing about as gracefully as airborne sharks. International guests will show off their unique flying creations alongside the Australian Kite Flyers Society members who will be showcasing their own designs.
And it’s not just the pros showing off their kiting skills: anyone can join the glorious sky-bound spectacle by whipping up your own creation at the kite-making workshop. If you would rather spectate, kick back with a picnic or fare from the food stalls (or fish ‘n’ chips from a Bondi vendor) and daydream as this unconventional ballet unfurls before you.
If you’re more energetic, skip along to the Pavilion Courtyard Amphitheatre for free dance and music workshops and a plethora of other entertainment – face painting, wandering minstrels, jugglers, stilt walkers, puppeteers, clowns and craft workshops.
Art lovers are even catered for at the Bondi Pavilion Gallery, which will be hosting a spectacular aerial art exhibition, or rather views from the kite’s perspective.
The Festival of The Winds is at Bondi Beach on Sun 14 September, 11am to 4pm.

Australian Human Rights Photo Competition 2008

To celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Australian Human Rights Commission is holding a photo competition based on the theme – ‘Dignity and justice for all of us’. The theme reinforces the vision of the Declaration as a commitment to universal dignity and justice, and reinforces how human rights are an inextricable part of our lives – for everyone, everywhere, everyday.
They’re searching for images that reflect the theme of the competition and provide a unique approach to a human rights subject. For some, the photograph will record a moment that celebrates dignity and justice; for others, it will capture fundamental rights and freedoms being recognised; or it may be an observance of what human rights means to you.
Send in your entries and there judging panel will choose a Winner and Highly Commended in each of the three categories: Under 18 (male), Under 18 (female) and 18 and above (age at 30 June 2008). Winners, Highly Commended and Short listed entries in each category will be placed on the website and displayed at the Commission’s annual Human Rights Medals and Awards ceremony on 10 December. Prize money is also on offer.

Patience. This is a means and not the end!

Following on from the success of ‘Sensory Bodies’ at Kudos Gallery in 2007 as well as numerous showings nationally, Kate Scardifield is branching out in her first solo project. ‘Patience. This is a means and not the end.’ is an exhibition of new work developed by the artist during a studio residency at Firstdraft Gallery.
Scardifield sets out to direct a silhouette play along the 14-metre gallery wall. Theatrically abundant and richly textured, the silhouettes are meticulously pinned down to cast ghostly shadows. A visually poetic demise is set to take place…

Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide Awards 2008
The Sydney Morning Herald 2008 Good Food Guide Awards were announced today and the restaurant of the year award went to Tetsuya’s (ranked the fifth best restaurant in the world in April by Restaurant Magazine.) We were reading an article about Tetsuya in The Australian on the weekend about how he’s struck a close, family-like bond with his Queensland spanner crab supplier who he apparently visits most weekends (his spanner crab supplier was originally his ocean trout supplier in Tasmania – Tetsuya’s signature dish is confit of ocean trout).
Two restaurants gained a hat (Forty One and Restaurant Balzac), Three restaurants dropped a hat (Guillaume at Bennelong, Pello and Pier Tasting Room), and there were 16 new entries! (Azuma, Bistro Ortolan, Four in Hand Dining Room, Foveaux Restaurant + Bar, glass, Glebe Point Diner, Oscillate Wildly, Perama, Salon Banc, Three Clicks West, Artespresso, Bacchus, 55 on Collins, The Old George & Dragon, Restaurant Como and Rock).
