Serious threat or horse play?
The equine influenza outbreak that has stopped racing and horse transport across Australia and could have spread to as many as 81 sites across NSW and Queensland. The national standstill on horse transport will continue until 1pm on Friday, when it may be lifted in western states but is likely to remain as an open-ended ban in NSW and Queensland.
No thoroughbred horses have been affected, but the virus is expected to halt the horse breeding season, which begins on September 1. The racing industry is bracing for a complete shutdown as it awaits results of tests carried out on three racehorses displaying elevated temperatures at Randwick early today.
